Community level · Regional EcosystemQueensland describes its native vegetation as Regional Ecosystems (REs) — combinations of a bioregion, a land zone and a vegetation community. The pre-clear layer maps the REs that existed before clearing at 1:100,000, with finer 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 mapping in more populated country, so in parts of South East Queensland and the Wet Tropics it is finer than Victoria's EVC mapping.
An RE code like 12.3.11 reads as bioregion 12 · land zone 3 · vegetation unit 11. The middle number is the land zone — the underlying geology and landform — which already tells you a great deal about the country before any lookup: land zone 3 is alluvial river flats, land zone 8 is fertile basalt, land zone 1 is tidal saltmarsh.
